Launching PCVR Games: Desktop Shortcuts

PCVR games usually need specific launch arguments to boot straight into VR. Get them wrong and the game either refuses to launch or opens flat on the monitor instead of in the headset.

If you got the game from ARMGDDN, there is nothing to do. Every game comes with a ready-made desktop and Start Menu shortcut, already set up with the correct launch arguments plus a few extras for better performance. Download it, launch the shortcut, play.

If you got the game somewhere else, you need to build the shortcut yourself:

  1. Look the game up on SteamDB and open its launch configuration to find the correct launch arguments.
  2. Create a shortcut pointing directly at the game’s VR executable — not through Steam.
  3. Add those arguments to the end of the shortcut’s Target line.

You do not need to add the game to Steam, and simply setting -vr as a Steam launch option is not the full answer.

Example — Half-Life: Alyx: make a shortcut directly to hlvr.exe, then append this to the Target line:

-vr -steam -noasserts -nopassiveasserts +map startup

If nobody is watching your playthrough on the monitor, you can also add -nowindow. It disables the mirrored desktop window and may give you a little extra performance:

-vr -steam -noasserts -nopassiveasserts +map startup -nowindow
